Part of my Mount Tamalpais series, this painting is a tribute to the mountain known to many as the ‘Sleeping Lady.’ Local legend tells of a beautiful Miwok maiden who, after being abandoned by her love, walked to the summit and died of heartbreak. It’s said the mountain was so moved by her grief that it changed its shape to honor her, forming the reclining silhouette we see today.
For me, Mount Tamalpais is more than just a landmark; it is a constant source of peace, power, and inspiration. I wanted to capture the spiritual energy I feel there, especially during the quiet beauty of a winter sunset. Using palette knives, I carved out the ridges and lines of her figure, letting layers of pink and purple play against earthy greens and oranges. The colors harmonize to recreate that specific, serene glow of the mountain at dusk.
