Twilight Transit: Market to the Castro
8x10 Oil on Wood Panel
There is a specific magic that happens in San Francisco during the twilight, hat brief window at when the sky turns a deep, electric indigo. This piece is my tribute to that moment, captured with the raw energy and physical weight that only a palette knife can achieve.
By applying the oil paint with a knife rather than a brush, I’ve given the historic yellow streetcar a sculpted, impasto texture. It stands out in thick, vibrant layers against the atmospheric bluish-purple of the city skyline. In the distance, the Ferry Building clock tower provides a sense of place, grounding the scene in the iconic rhythm of Market Street.
To me, this painting isn't just a view of the city, it’s a tactile experience of it. The heavy texture invites the eye to wander over the surface, mirroring the rugged, enduring spirit of San Francisco itself.
