Expressive Oil Paintings
This mesmerizing figure is has been big in our house this past year as my two teen daughters (both musicians in their own band) have been enjoying and performing her music. To me, Stevie is reminiscent of an ethereal goddess. Her long, wavy hair cascades down her shoulders, a waterfall of golden threads that catches the light and frames her face with an enchanting glow.
I painted this portrait from a photo promoting Edge of Seventeen, which is a reminder that this woman started her career around my daughters’ ages. Her eyes, a striking shade of deep brown, hold a sense of mystery and wisdom, reflecting the stories of countless songs we now know, but back then were just coming to life. I wanted this portrait to encapsulate not just her iconic style but also the spirit of a woman who weaves magic through her art, inviting the viewer to lose themselves in the melody of her presence.

When I was studying images of Freddie to paint, I came across a quote of his, “I won’t be a rock star. I will be a legend.” I wish I would have been able to see and hear him perform live. His talent, his spirit, his bravery and his music live on and yes, he is a legend.
Painting this portrait of Freddie Mercury was an electrifying experience. His dynamic stage presence and unique style came to mind, capturing his charisma and passion. I painted him faster and with a blend of admiration and excitement, channeling the energy of his performances into my art. His expressive features and the bold colors associated with his persona definitely pushed me to experiment and push my creative boundaries.

Inspired by a photo of John Lennon taken on the roof of Apple Studios during the Beatles’ last performance together. It gave off a wild optimism about his future but also that he was giving it all he had for this band that was a family to him. Capturing a moment that symbolizes creativity and rebellion. The energy of the scene inspired me, evoking emotions of joy and reflection on the band's legacy. It was like I could feel both the weight of that finality and the vibrancy of the music, channeling those feelings into my brushwork. I felt a tremendous sense of freedom while painting this portrait.
